TiAIN based nanoscale multilayer coatings designed to adapt their tribological properties at elevated temperatures
The addition of properly selected elements, coupled in nanoscale multilayer structures, can further enhance the properties of TiAlN coatings and bring new high performance. The incorporation of Y in the nanoscale pseudo-superlattice TiAlCrN/TiAlYN with typical period of 1.7 nm not only improves the oxidation resistance but also effectively reduces the coefficient of friction of the coating from 0.9 to 0.65 at temperatures in the range of 850–950 °C. The adaptation of the tribological properties occurs as a result of the preferential migration of the Y to the column boundaries. TiAlN/VN superlattice can achieve another self-adaptation process. During friction the coatings adapt themselves to the combined thermal and mechanical wear by the formation of highly lubricious vanadium-oxides due to high flash temperatures at the asperity contacts on the surface. The integrity of the bulk of the coating is retained, leading to exceptionally low, for superhard coatings, friction coefficient of 0.5 and a wear coefficient of 2 × 10−17 m3·N−1·m−1. The coatings have been deposited by the combined steered cathodic arc unbalanced magnetron sputtering method.</p
Higher-order factors of personality: Do they exist?
Scales that measure the Big Five personality factors are often substantially intercorrelated. These correlations are sometimes interpreted as implying the existence of two higher order factors of personality. The authors show that correlations between measures of broad personality factors do not necessarily imply the existence of higher order factors and might instead be due to variables that represent same-signed blends of orthogonal factors. Therefore, the hypotheses of higher order factors and blended variables can only be tested with data on lower level personality variables that define the personality factors. The authors compared the higher order factor model and the blended variable model in three participant samples using the Big Five Aspect Scales, and found better fit for the latter model. In other analyses using the HEXACO Personality Inventory, they identified mutually uncorrelated markers of six personality factors. The authors conclude that correlations between personality factor scales can be explained without postulating any higher order dimensions of personality. © 2009 by the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, Inc
Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory without
This paper completes the argument that lattice simulations of partially
quenched QCD can provide quantitative information about QCD itself, with the
aid of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. A barrier to doing this
has been the inclusion of , the partially quenched generalization of
the , in previous calculations in the partially quenched effective
theory. This invalidates the low energy perturbative expansion, gives rise to
many new unknown parameters, and makes it impossible to reliably calculate the
relation between the partially quenched theory and low energy QCD. We show that
it is straightforward and natural to formulate partially quenched chiral
perturbation theory without , and that the resulting theory contains
the effective theory for QCD without the . We also show that previous
results, obtained including , can be reinterpreted as applying to the
theory without . We contrast the situation with that in the quenched
effective theory, where we explain why it is necessary to include .
We also compare the derivation of chiral perturbation theory in partially
quenched QCD with the standard derivation in unquenched QCD. We find that the
former cannot be justified as rigorously as the latter, because of the absence
of a physical Hilbert space. Finally, we present an encouraging result:
unphysical double poles in certain correlation functions in partially quenched
chiral perturbation theory can be shown to be a property of the underlying
theory, given only the symmetries and some plausible assumptions.Comment: 45 pages, no figure
Nonlinear Realization of Chiral Symmetry on the Lattice
We formulate lattice theories in which chiral symmetry is realized
nonlinearly on the fermion fields. In this framework the fermion mass term does
not break chiral symmetry. This property allows us to use the Wilson term to
remove the doubler fermions while maintaining exact chiral symmetry on the
lattice. Our lattice formulation enables us to address non-perturbative
questions in effective field theories of baryons interacting with pions and in
models involving constituent quarks interacting with pions and gluons. We show
that a system containing a non-zero density of static baryons interacting with
pions can be studied on the lattice without encountering complex action
problems. In our formulation one can also decide non-perturbatively if the
chiral quark model of Georgi and Manohar provides an appropriate low-energy
description of QCD. If so, one could understand why the non-relativistic quark

The use of viral 2A sequence for the simultaneous over-expression of both the vgf gene and enhanced green fluorescent protein eGFP
Introduction: The viral 2A sequence has become an attractive alternative to the traditional internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) for simultaneous over-expression of two genes and in combination with recombinant adeno-associated viruses (rAAV) has been used to manipulate gene expression in vitro.New Method: To develop a rAAV construct in combination with the viral 2A sequence to allow long-term over-expression of the vgf gene and fluorescent marker gene for tracking of the transfected neurones in vivo.Results: Transient transfection of the AAV plasmid containing the vgf gene, viral 2A sequence and eGFP into SH-SY5Y cells resulted in eGFP fluorescence comparable to a commercially available reporter construct. This increase in fluorescent cells was accompanied by an increase in VGF mRNA expression. Infusion of the rAAV vector containing VGF, viral 2A sequence and eGFP resulted in eGFP fluorescence in the hypothalamus of both mice and Siberian hamsters, 32 weeks post infusion. In-situ hybridisation confirmed that the location of VGF mRNA expression in the hypothalamus corresponded to the eGFP pattern of fluorescence.Comparison with old method: The viral 2A sequence is much smaller than the traditional IRES and therefore allowed over-expression of vgf with fluorescent tracking without compromising viral capacity. Conclusion: The use of the viral 2A sequence in the AAV plasmid allowed the simultaneous expression of both genes in vitro. When used in combination with rAAV it resulted in long-term over-expression of both genes at equivalent locations in the hypothalamus of both Siberian hamsters and mice, without any adverse effects
The Covariant Entropy Bound, Brane Cosmology, and the Null Energy Condition
In discussions of Bousso's Covariant Entropy Bound, the Null Energy Condition
is always assumed, as a sufficient {\em but not necessary} condition which
helps to ensure that the entropy on any lightsheet shall necessarily be finite.
The spectacular failure of the Strong Energy Condition in cosmology has,
however, led many astrophysicists and cosmologists to consider models of dark
energy which violate {\em all} of the energy conditions, and indeed the current
data do not completely rule out such models. The NEC also has a questionable
status in brane cosmology: it is probably necessary to violate the NEC in the
bulk in order to obtain a "self-tuning" theory of the cosmological constant. In
order to investigate these proposals, we modify the Karch-Randall model by
introducing NEC-violating matter into in such a way that the brane
cosmological constant relaxes to zero. The entropy on lightsheets remains
finite. However, we still find that the spacetime is fundamentally incompatible
with the Covariant Entropy Bound machinery, in the sense that it fails the
Bousso-Randall consistency condition. We argue that holography probably forbids
all {\em cosmological} violations of the NEC, and that holography is in fact
the fundamental physical principle underlying the cosmological version of the

Genetic and phenotypic characterization of indolent T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
Indolent T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders of the gastrointestinal tract are rare clonal T-cell diseases that more commonly occur in the intestines and have a protracted clinical course. Different immunophenotypic subsets have been described, but the molecular pathogenesis and cell of origin of these lymphocytic proliferations is poorly understood. Hence, we performed targeted next-generation sequencing and comprehensive immunophenotypic analysis of ten indolent T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, which comprised CD4 <sup>+</sup> (n=4), CD8 <sup>+</sup> (n=4), CD4 <sup>+</sup> /CD8 <sup>+</sup> (n=1) and CD4 <sup>-</sup> /CD8 <sup>-</sup> (n=1) cases. Genetic alterations, including recurrent mutations and novel rearrangements, were identified in 8/10 (80%) of these lymphoproliferative disorders. The CD4 <sup>+</sup> , CD4 <sup>+</sup> /CD8 <sup>+</sup> , and CD4 <sup>-</sup> /CD8 <sup>-</sup> cases harbored frequent alterations of JAK-STAT pathway genes (5/6, 82%); STAT3 mutations (n=3), SOCS1 deletion (n=1) and STAT3-JAK2 rearrangement (n=1), and 4/6 (67%) had concomitant mutations in epigenetic modifier genes (TET2, DNMT3A, KMT2D). Conversely, 2/4 (50%) of the CD8 <sup>+</sup> cases exhibited structural alterations involving the 3' untranslated region of the IL2 gene. Longitudinal genetic analysis revealed stable mutational profiles in 4/5 (80%) cases and acquisition of mutations in one case was a harbinger of disease transformation. The CD4 <sup>+</sup> and CD4 <sup>+</sup> /CD8 <sup>+</sup> lymphoproliferative disorders displayed heterogeneous Th1 (T-bet <sup>+</sup> ), Th2 (GATA3 <sup>+</sup> ) or hybrid Th1/Th2 (T-bet <sup>+</sup> /GATA3 <sup>+</sup> ) profiles, while the majority of CD8 <sup>+</sup> disorders and the CD4 <sup>-</sup> /CD8 <sup>-</sup> disease showed a type-2 polarized (GATA3 <sup>+</sup> ) effector T-cell (Tc2) phenotype. Additionally, CD103 expression was noted in 2/4 CD8 <sup>+</sup> cases. Our findings provide insights into the pathogenetic bases of indolent T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and confirm the heterogeneous nature of these diseases. Detection of shared and distinct genetic alterations of the JAK-STAT pathway in certain immunophenotypic subsets warrants further mechanistic studies to determine whether therapeutic targeting of this signaling cascade is efficacious for a proportion of patients with these recalcitrant diseases
